Best playmats by age and function

– TUMMY TIME MATS BY AGE

At any age, you can always do tummy time in your own bed, but I recommend getting the appropriate mat for it! Beds are high, therefore not the safest place and not fun at all!

So, if you want to know how to tummy time a newborn I recommend the models below!

Newborn babies struggle during tummy time. They hate it, and have a really hard time trying to keep their little fragile necks up! That’s why the removable pillow for support and the attached toys from mats 19, 20  and 24 will make the experience more durable and pleasant.

From number 1 to 9 you will have a pretty place for pictures, a mat for decoration and a small and cozy space to fit your tiny baby. For this phase, small or medium and soft playmats are ideal!

For the first six months, in general (a little less or a little more, depending on the size of the baby and the mat) a tummy time mat will be important for development and to have a safe space when baby starts to roll from back to stomach. The more different textures, toys attached (like a little mirror or teethers) and vibrant colors, best to keep them happy and occupied. Some models even encourage cognition and motor skills (like mats 15 and 16) or can last much longer as a decoration piece for nursery or bedroom and be a place for baby naps and lounging (like mats 13 and 14)

Also, number 8 is amazing because it turns into a bag that allows you to carry many toys around the house, and if you are willing to pay more for your baby comfort, number 6 is made of the finest and purest material!

? SPECIAL TIP: Since the main intention of all play mats is to keep baby safely out of the main floor, remember: the bigger the baby, the bigger mat!

Best playmats after fifth month

Around the fifth month, babies start to sit by themselves, but as their balance is still not well developed, they might fall frequently, and being on a playmat can prevent any head bangs on the floor!
The same is also true when the baby starts to crawl, around the eighth month: lack of balance leads to some falls, and being on a playmat will make your baby fall safely and don’t be afraid to try to crawl. At this stage, the smaller models will no longer be very useful, except for photos and decoration, because your baby will not stop still in the same place anymore.

In addition, several models are interactive, which serves as good entertainment and also as a development tool for the baby! The foam material from almost all the mats listed below is perfect if your little one is starting to crawl or trying to stand and you have hard floors. The cool thing from some models is that they can be used for a long time to help baby learn the alphabet in a fun a ludic way.

Some are foldables, like mats 9 to 14, which means you can fold it however you want and make it different sizes to fit  your house (I particularly like the number 6, because in addition to the cute pandas, it also has a ruler for you to measure your baby’s growth!
